Baby Kate

LOVE.

that’s all I really have to say about this baby and this session. I am so happy to know this family. They make pretty little princesses, and it’s such a privilege to me to photograph them. Baby Kate was an angel through her whole shoot and I had tons of fun with Emma and her BIG personality. So.much.fun. It could have been as much her session as her new baby sister’s. She was my focus so much of the time because 1. she’s adorable and 2. she needs that attention right now. It made her feel special to have a flower crown and be important and a focus for me. She was so good with the jealousy that came up for her when it was time to focus on baby sis. And we captured some precious moments between the two of them together. My favorite was when she kissed her toes. melt. Thank you for inviting me into your home and for a really nice session Van B’s.

ps. How gorgeous is mama’s hair?! Lucky girls to get that gene.

The Edwards Family | Northern California Redwoods

One of my most favorite people on this earth is Erin Edwards. We’ve grown into a friendship together over the last 9 years, both of us learning and awkwardly changing, and now we are connected at the deepest of heart and soul levels. She understands me inside out and loves me just as I am, as I love her. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a wonderful friend in my life, other than my husband. I’m grateful beyond words to share the intimate parts of my mind and life with her. Everything I tell her is received with love and authentic understanding, no judgement, no competition, no false words of confidence just to be kind. There is also so much laughter between us, like immature teenagers divulging all the asinine craziness that goes on in our minds too. That laughter and ability to laugh at ourselves is so healing for me too. The best part of this session was the walk I got to take with Erin through the redwood grove, taking in our surroundings and breathing in that moist, fresh air before we drove away.

Photographing her family is so fun. Her children are full of personality, which I feel like we really captured in this session. They moved to Arizona over the past year, which was heart breaking for everyone, but thankfully, it didn’t effect the closeness we share. She came back to graduate from her masters program and asked me to capture her family again while she was here. I couldn’t be more honored. She requested film, so we shot film and digital (more film than digital). She’s been with me on this photography journey since it began and has left behind some very talented photographers to work with me. I know it’s not just because we are friends. She tells me always it’s because she truly loves my work and style. When anyone chooses me for that reason, then it’s always a good fit and a beautiful session, guaranteed.

Thank you for playing with me among the giant beauty of the Redwoods, Edwards Family. I love all of you and miss you already. xo

This is Eight and Four.

This beach. It’s saved my state of mind many a day of feeling bogged down by the monotony of life. How many days this beach has held me and warmed my skin when I needed it and refreshed my mind. Just a short, windy drive through redwood trees to the coast, and 25 minutes later, we arrive at 20th street beach. The air is a little cooler, and smells of salt water. We can see to infinity as we peek out through the trees and trek down the road to the beach. This beach. Brad brought me here in the beginning and set up a beach bonfires for us. We sat in the night, listening to waves, looking up to the stars, talking about…. everything. Now we bring our babies here. And now they get to let the ocean pull everything weighing them down out of them too, so we can all start fresh. Many times I bring my film cameras down here and take my frustrations out shooting. I don’t believe in myself enough.  Sometimes I need to go there, in a mad and determined way, and say to myself  “I can DO this!” to get motivated to try and possibly fail. Funny that we are all so afraid of failure, when it’s a teacher and path toward success, and in the process makes us so much more real. It’s just that ego that wants to get it right the 1st time, I guess.

Ava turned 8 on April 26th, so photographing her as she is now was my main goal.  Nathan is 4 and I hadn’t shot him after his January Bday yet either, so here I am, once again practicing with medium format and 35 mm film on them. I want to shoot more film, but I still have fear to work through and many mistakes to make. My D700 feels like my 2nd right hand. I know it by heart and I know how to make magic with it. I need to remind myself that I got there and continue to get better because I’m practicing. So I’ll keep practicing. Both.

There’s just something about film though. It has an authenticity that really speaks to me. So glad it’s still here for us.

*If you want to shoot film at your session, just say the word and we can play with it too.

Greyson Pace

You forget how tiny they are. Their little bodies melt into you. As I walked in the door, daddy handed baby to me. “Do you want to hold him?” Oh, the luxury of holding a newborn in my arms. I just love how it feels. I told them I can appreciate so much more the sweetness of this stage when it’s not my baby. I was too sleep deprived and anxious the first time around. I think that’s why it’s become easy for me to comfort newborns…. I have the skills left over from having my own, but the ones I’m soothing now I haven’t used all my energy on. I’m not trying to balance equal attention between kids, plus a photography job, and mommy work on top of it all. So, I have so much patience and time to relish in the moment. I love that. It’s amazing. Hats off to this mama who is gracefully learning how to juggle two babes now. She is a light and a love. She truly appreciates the art of photography, and after receiving her images wrote to me saying:

“Cassie, I am speechless over these pictures! I literally have tears in my eyes. You are such a talent and I’m beyond grateful to have found you. I love them, they mean the world to me.”

It’s a BOY!

There is no way to fully describe how happy I am for this sweet couple. Dear to my heart. My little sister and her hubby. They’re adding to the family tree and they are truly amazing people (in my humble opinion , of course). This babe is so lucky to get them for parents. I can’t wait to meet him and tell him so. To share the journey of motherhood with Mina will also be a gift. We share so much already, our view of this life we live, and who we live it with. We have the same sentiment, and aching for love, kind of heart. We know each others truths because we were raised together. And we are like minded. She knows me inside and loves me always. Those are the kinds of relationships I want in my life and to have it with a sister is rare. Even though there are endless cards, and quotes, and trinkets to message us that that’s how it “should be” with your sister, I wonder how many of us actually feel that way. We don’t get to chose our family, but we love them in a special way because they are family.  I get to love her both ways.

*Images shot at high noon with Kodak Portra 400 on a Mamiya645.—which goes to show, like I always say, there is no perfect time of day to shoot, just perfect moments to capture.

A Holiday Play Date | for Tinyprints

What a compliment it was to hear from Tiny Prints last month, asking me to style a holiday-themed session for them! I was partly in shock and at the same time SUPER excited!!

This shoot inspiration came from thinking about those of us out there who don’t get a wonderful Winter Wonderland where we live. I grew up on the east coast and after 12 years of living here on the west coast, and raising my family here, I’m finally getting used to the feeling of Christmas in the sun. I wanted to showcase that the spirit of Christmas can thrive even in Sunny California, without soft, white snow falling down from the sky.

I teamed up with freelance art director, Jennifer Lai Stern, and we took a trip to one of my favorite beaches in Santa cruz to set up a little boho/vintage holiday play date. The theme was tea party/hot cocoa and cookies, plus decorating a mini tree on the beach. We used the beach because we thought it captured the free spirit and wonder in the same way that christmas morning can for children and the parents watching them expereince it. We used our own kids and some of their friends from school to enjoy the play date. The beach was quiet. It was dead low tide at sunset and 70 degrees. It couldn’t have worked out more PERFECTLY for us.

Today, all of what went into this is up on the Inspired By This Blog. We are excited to share it with you and grateful to have been asked to be a part of it. xo
